ArcelorMittal Science Centres are interconnected and aligned to support National Science and Technology in their call to improve the performance in Mathematics and Science in South African schools by providing equipment and facilities in communities where resources are limited. ArcelorMittal Science Centres participates and host of different science competitions, exhibitions and science fairs.
What does the ArcelorMittal Sebokeng Science Centre do?
The Science Centre is a non-profit Centre of Excellence that seeks to improve Mathematics and Science performance at schools, to stimulate interest and curiosity in these particular fields and to ultimately provide information, knowledge and skills training to teachers, learners, school leavers and the general public in the communities surrounding the company’s operations.

Each week more than 500 potential high school learners are transported by buses to the Science Centre for additional tutoring in the STEMI (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Innovation) subjects, as well as computer studies and life skills. This includes spending time in the Science Centre’s practical science exhibition facility. With it’s state-of-the-art Science laboratories, the Science Centre enables educators (or “edutainers” as they are known because of the method of training that has been adopted by the Centre) and learners to perform scientific experiments in order to improve the learners knowledge and understanding of these subjects. As part of its drive to encourage innovation, the Science Centre also has a robotics program.
An annual career day – hosting universities, public and private sector companies and educational specialists – has become a much anticipated feature. Learners and teachers engage with the companies and universities for guidance on career options and requirements for bursaries.
